Remodeling "Renaissance Awards, Grand Award" -

Roots Spread Rambling farmhouses dot the New
England countryside, many added on to over the years out of necessity, with
each addition
built in the style of its era. Keeping in mind the
owners' admiration of Cape Cod's shingle-style homes, the designers of this
project decided the 2,200-square-foot addition would, like its New England
ancestors, transform as it meandered from its roots.
"The complexity of
what was involved was substantial, with the connecting lines and roof shapes,"
one judge said. "And the complexity was wonderfully solved."
Where the
addition touches the house, the fenestration follows the lines of the
Federalist home. As the addition's lines move past the new entry porch, new
window
types and building forms are introduced.
The
master bedroom suite was built in a carriage house motif, with shingle-style
influences--a highly pitched roof, deep eaves, protruding bays. But clapboard
substitutes for shingles to keep the addition consistent with the main house. A
turreted sunroom acts as a hub, off of which a wraparound porch and terrace
extend. A rotunda connects other rooms at the addition's
corner.
Although the addition bears its own architectural stamp,
traditional features integrate it inside. Bookshelves, wall paneling, window
seats, and other details mimic those in the original home, and each provides an
element of surprise and joy.
