Merit Awards, Studio Addition, Rockport,
MA Adding onto old houses can be tricky, especially when previous
additions have produced a jumble of rooflines where the proposed addition meets
the house. That was the challenge of this 177-square-foot garden studio at the
rear of a 290-year-old colonial home.
Rather than mimicking details of
the original, the designers used a new form - a hexagon. Then they related the
$30,000 room to the existing house by borrowing from its trim details. A short
passage-way connects the new room to the house. It hides the awkward spot where
a shed-roofed, turn-of-the-century sun room connects to an original rear
ell.
